Beorunna's Well

Beorunna's Well is a giant, roughly 250-foot-diameter hole in the ground surrounded by trees. According to Uthgardt legend, Beorunna, Uthgar's father, defeated the ancient demon Zukothoth at this very spot, casting it into the earth and tearing open a gaping hole in the ground.

(Translator's note: this file says "Uthgar's father"; People/PCs/Cain.md's barbarian-culture section calls Beorunna "Uthgar's mother" instead. Left as found in each source rather than silently picked — GM should confirm which is correct.)

The present-day Black Lion tribe lives near Beorunna's Well. The tribe itself has gradually abandoned the ancient ways and settled into stark but practical houses. The tribe's members nowadays fear Beorunna's Well more than they revere it. For all the Uthgardt barbarian tribes, however, the Well is one of the holiest sites, and members of other tribes are welcome on holy days to honor the old traditions.

At the edge of Beorunna's Well is an old rope hoist that leads to the bottom of the hole. At the bottom is a round platform, raised above the surrounding area. The bottom of the hole itself is a massive triangular chamber, with the ancient altar and totem pole of the Black Lions on its southern edge. In the northwest corner is a bubbling spring, which continuously supplies fresh water to a large basin. The basin, in turn, flows off somewhere deep underground.
