Elara Dawnbreaker

Paladin of Lathander - Champion of Dawn's Justice CR 12

Controlled intensity. Elara speaks precisely — short sentences, deliberate pauses. She doesn't raise her voice. She doesn't need to. When she's angry, she goes quieter, not louder.

Lathander's cadence. She occasionally uses dawn metaphors without meaning to — "bring this to light," "before this goes dark." They're ingrained, not performative.

The merchant mask. Her cover persona is friendly and slightly dull — a cloth trader from Silverymoon. She's good at it. But she forgets to blink normally when someone mentions Myrkul or death magic.

Grief under glass. She speaks of her parents in past tense, matter-of-factly. She's had twenty years to practise. It still costs her something every time.

Sample phrases

"I've been patient for a long time. I can be patient a little longer." (calm, waiting) "That is not a question I'm answering under a merchant's roof." (cover identity strained) "You're mixing up justice and vengeance. I've spent years telling myself they're the same thing." (rare honesty) "My god asks me to renew and to hope. He didn't say anything about forgiving the unrepentant." (faith rationalisation) "I don't need your help. But I'll accept it, if you're offering." (to the party) "He is dead, then." [long pause] "Good. That's... good." (learning Sayton is dead)

Elara is a paladin built on a revenge quest she has had to reframe as justice for twenty years. Lathander is a god of dawn and renewal — not retribution. She knows this. Her faith is genuine, but it has been quietly bent around a wound she's never let close.

Now that Sayton is dead

The void. Her entire adult life has been organised around a single purpose. His death — even just news of it — lands strangely. She should feel relief. She may feel hollow instead.

Did she get closure? She wasn't there. She didn't do it. She didn't look him in the eyes. Her warriors will see her as freed. She won't be sure she is.

Combat behaviour

Opening move: If she expects a hard fight she activates Sacred Weapon before engaging. She announces herself to enemies of Lathander — she wants them to know what's coming. Against undead or fiends, Turn the Unholy to scatter lesser threats and isolate the primary target.

Mid-fight: She positions to keep her auras (Aura of Protection, Aura of Courage) covering her warriors. She uses Crusader's Mantle when her allies are in a sustained grind. Divine Smite is saved for critical hits or to finish a powerful foe.

When allies fall: She uses Lay on Hands without hesitation. Her warriors are her responsibility. She will break off an attack to get to a downed companion — this is her one tactical vulnerability.

Tone in battle: Quiet. She doesn't shout war cries. She calls instructions to her warriors in short, clipped sentences. Against necromancers or death cultists, a cold precision enters her — she's spent years preparing for exactly this.

Reluctance to kill mundane opponents: Against non-undead humans she defaults to disabling strikes and Zone of Truth interrogations. She has no interest in killing people who might still be redeemed.

Relationships

Her warriors (2–3). Loyal and competent, but they follow Elara the crusader, not Elara the grieving daughter. She keeps that part of herself walled off from them.

The party. She'll be guarded at first — independent operators are unpredictable. But she respects demonstrated competence. If they helped end Sayton's work, she owes them acknowledgement.

Myrkul's return. She has witnessed Myrkul's return. But she's not afraid. She's been hunting one of his priests for twenty years. She's already in this war.
