• Born into a poor family in the Silverymoon region. His mother's pregnancy was unexpected, since the parents had tried for a child for years without success and had already lost hope. A new mouth to feed, however, didn't ease the poor family's life, especially with the mother giving birth at a later age. The family lived a simple life outside the city, in apparent peace and solitude. They visited the city mainly to get supplies. Simple living, closeness to nature, and his heavenly lineage awakened in the young child a powerful sense of what is right and what is wrong, and a desire to fight injustice. When the child was Y years old, his father died accidentally in the middle of the night. Great distress arose to banish the darkness of the night, and the child found he could conjure light at the moment of greatest need. That night the child also met Azeus for the first time, a beautiful, angelic being, who in the darkest hour of the night came to the child and took his father's body away. Soon after this, an elderly man arrived at the family's home, dressed in valuable, beautifully ornate clothing. A handsome coat of arms, a golden winged lion, adorned the man's chest. The man's name was Girart, and he was known by the epithet the Faithful. He was from the Watchful Order, one of their leaders, and he wanted to take young Malekith into his care. They promised the mother that the young boy had a brilliant future ahead of him. The order would take care of him, clothe him, train him, and provide him a secure profession for the rest of his life, and he would want for nothing. The mother gladly gave the child up for training, since she had no other way to provide for her family after the father's death. The years at the school passed quickly. The training was strict, but virtuous, and everyone was trained to uphold local laws, to hold to the truth, and to serve the citizens, and to respect and trust fellow members of the order. Malekith's training progressed quickly, and he was found to be especially capable and law-abiding, and he got to study under Girart, in the order's internal oversight division, where only the very best were taken. The importance of the training proved especially evident when Girart was killed on a routine assignment, in which a youth still struggling with his powers accidentally killed him while being fetched for training. Balian rose to head of internal oversight in Girart's place.
