Camryn Hebert - Baron of Deerwater
<!-- MERGED FROM: People/Camryn Hebert - Deerwaterin paroni.md (primary/base); Archive/legacy-deerwater-prep.md (was Session Notes.md — Glimmewood capture-camp narrative — session-prep-derived, preserved in full per spec priority 3); FGU Bridge/campaign_history.md (Camryn Hebert NPC section — confirmed subsumed in People file; SESSION RECAPS Session 1 & 2 — confirms the Glimmewood rescue already occurred in play and adds Rolar Copeland as the name of Rimehill's baron, Adriel's father) -->Background and History
Camryn Hebert is a third-generation noble — his grandfather earned the barony in service under the previous Grand Duke, and the family has since managed Deerwater's administration loyally and modestly. Camryn has never wanted to be a great lord or a war marshal. He has wanted to be a good baron — that would be enough, that would be sufficient.
He learned governance through practice, not academy. His father took him along to court sessions, toll stations, and village elder meetings from a young age. "Deerwater is small matters," his father said. "Govern the small matters, and the big ones won't come." Camryn took this advice to heart.
The Baron of Deerwater is Frederick's vassal, but the relationship has been more administrative than personal — taxes are paid, summons are heeded, appearances at court are proper. Camryn has never sought a special standing in Frederick's eyes, nor does he imagine himself politically important. This humility is both his strength and the reason he was so easy to displace.
Imprisonment has changed Camryn. Not broken him — but changed him. He has sat in his cell and gone over every moment he could have done differently. Wondered who betrayed him. Calculated. He has emerged as a baron who has lost his naivety but not his values.
Physical Appearance
Camryn is a man in his fifties (roughly 40 years old per the Session Notes source's age estimate), accustomed to being in a room where others do the talking. Not tall, not short. Broad-shouldered, practical bearing — a man who has gone on inspection rounds, walked his city's walls on his own two feet.
His hair is brown and graying, often tied back at the nape in a knot that holds without any particular effort. His face is open and straight-lined — he isn't handsome in the courtly sense of the word, but he has a charisma of reliability: a person looks at him and intuitively believes this man says what he means.
His hands are the hands of work done. He has a habit of looking directly into someone's eyes a little longer than is socially customary — not threateningly, but as if checking whether the other person is truly present.
His time in captivity shows: he's lost weight, there's a fatigue under his eyes that no night's sleep removes. But his spine is straight.
Personality
Camryn is blunt without cruelty. He doesn't dance around things, but he also doesn't needlessly cut people down. He has good practical intelligence — not a strategist's sharpness, but a strong ability to read people and situations at an everyday level.
He doesn't doubt his own values, but he now doubts his own judgments of people. Captivity taught him that someone of his own opened the gates. This hasn't produced cynicism in him, but rather more careful consideration. He still wants to trust — but now wants a reason earned first.
Politically he is a loyalist — not for ideological reasons, but because he sincerely believes that structures hold society together, and structures require respect to function. Frederick is his duke, not a symbol — a concrete person to whom he is accountable and whom he serves. This loyalty isn't blind, but it is deep.
He has no particular opinion on the Night Watch or Watchful Order politics — he's a small-town baron, not a philosopher. But he remembers the golden lion on Maren's chest. He remembers everything.
Voice and Manner of Speech
Camryn speaks evenly and clearly, like someone accustomed to having his words recorded. Not ornate, no courtly language. Northern practicality shows in his word choices.
He doesn't apologize for existing — doesn't hesitate, doesn't submit, but also doesn't perform. He is a baron who has lost a castle, not a baron who has lost his worth.
Since his captivity, his speech has a new trait: he pauses before answering. Not from uncertainty, but a habit born of months of silence. He listens completely before opening his mouth.

Relationship to the Player Characters
Camryn isn't a rescued princess — he's a capable vassal in a crisis. He's grateful for his release, but gratitude is for him an obligation, not a feeling: he wants to repay the help concretely, not with words.
He immediately offers the players everything he knows — Maren's description, Aidan's name, the route the escort used, details he's gone over in his mind for a long time. He is an excellent source of information precisely because he has sat quietly and organized his memories.
He isn't passive, however. He wants to return to Deerwater and reclaim authority — but he's wise enough to understand it won't succeed without support and a plan. He doesn't rush. He waits for the right moment.
His daughter Sera is married to Adriel. Adriel is the eldest son of Rimehill's baron, Rolar Copeland, and heir to Rimehill.
The Situation in Deerwater as He Sees It
For Camryn, the worst thing isn't his own imprisonment — it's not knowing. He doesn't know what has happened to his city. Is it calm? Afraid? Has Sayton built some plausible explanation for his absence? Are the inhabitants alright?
He believes that most of his people don't know what happened. They were given some story. Someone died quietly, or vanished. Camryn wants to know the story before his return.
Going to the Grand Duke is a clear top priority for him — not out of cowardice, but out of logic. He needs authority behind him. Frederick can provide that.
How was Camryn abducted from Deerwater? The baron barely knows anything about recent events. He's been imprisoned for quite a while now. The last things he remembers before his capture:
- A courier arrived from Silverymoon. According to the courier, the Grand Duke had important news for the baron, and the baron was needed for a meeting in Silverymoon.
- The seal was official, the courier followed protocol, and it was highly credible
- The baron realized something was wrong when the escort didn't follow the route to Silverymoon
- The baron remembers the face, the courier's name, and physical features
The Courier Maren Ashwell, originally from Everlund. A medium-height, bony person. In good shape, and looks like a woman who walks a lot. Short dark hair. Pleasant, symmetrical features. Sharp-eyed. Dressed in dark, good-quality traveling gear. A small golden lion on her chest. (The Watchful Order's emblem.) Carries a pack that always looks full.
Maren speaks quietly, but with careful deliberation. She doesn't waste her words. While listening she's motionless, and registers everything. She isn't warm, but she isn't cold either. She's thoroughly professional at all times.
The baron remembers that Maren had a black stain on her index finger, like someone who writes a lot. It was so noticeable that it stuck well in the baron's mind. Maren also had rings, two on each hand.
Maren's Cover Story Maren arrived carrying a letter bearing the Grand Duke's seal. Genuine, or an especially skilled forgery. According to the letter, the Grand Duke required the baron's presence in Silverymoon to discuss actions regarding the orcs. According to the baron, Maren said she had come as fast as she could, at the request of her superior, Aidan.
Why should Camryn be taken to Silverymoon instead of Deerwater? The baron doesn't know who to trust in Deerwater. The former guard captain's deputy handled his capture. Some of the guards are his own former hires. Sayton took over the city from within. Someone opened the gates, or looked the other way. The baron hasn't governed Deerwater in months. Camryn doesn't know the loyalties or the compromises made for safety by the people now nominally in control of the city.
Returning to Deerwater would require immediately seizing authority, and taking it from people he can't directly trust.
Furthermore, the letter came bearing the Grand Duke's seal. Whether the Grand Duke sent it himself or not, in any case the Grand Duke needs to know he has a potential problem. The baron's primary loyalty is to the Grand Duke regardless.
The Capture — Glimmewood Logging Area (session-prep details)
Added from Archive legacy-deerwater-prep.md (was Session Notes.md) — supplements the capture narrative above with physical and situational details that weren't in the People file.
The baron was taken to Glimmewood, to a logging area a few hours' walk from Deerwater. Miles Bolver, Deerwater's current captain of the guard (and former second-in-command during the baron's rule, who betrayed the previous guard captain to obtain his position), delivered him there on Sayton's behalf. The baron's entire family was imprisoned in the same area. The camp was guarded by about 5 guards loyal to Miles, who didn't know what was happening in the city.
Camp description: the foreman's cabin, the sleeping barracks, a storage shed, stumps and woodpiles from felled trees, shallow pits used for bark-stripping, a sawpit, broken-down carts.
Deep Dreamer — a monster that had taken up residence in the logging area, which had taken control of both the imprisoned loggers and the baron by manipulating their dreams. The baron was exposed to the creature the longest: he had been kept locked at the forest's edge for a long time, and when the party found him he was gaunt and mentally disturbed.
This episode is already resolved in play, no longer an open GM hook: per FGU Bridge/campaign_history.md's Session 1 (2026-05-23), the party defeated the Deep Dreamer in a long battle, and per Session 2 (2026-06-20), the baron was rescued and brought up to date on the situation in Deerwater. Miles Bolver's own subplot (searching for an escape route, guard Aldric's suspicious questions about the baron, the 8-hour timeline) doesn't directly relate to Camryn's own profile — see Archive legacy-deerwater-prep.md / GM callout below if Miles Bolver gets his own file later.
