High priest of Myrkul.

Background and Motives

Sayton Lucius is 60 years old, born in 1307, in the realm of Thay, far to the east. Sayton was originally born a slave and had to serve the local rulers, but managed to escape. After wandering the world for a time, seeking a place as far from the realm of Thay as possible, he found his way to the wealthy merchant realm of Amn.

In Amn, Sayton noticed how, especially the elderly and the rich, tried by every means to avoid death and postpone the inevitable. Sayton received his first vision, and gradually came to know Myrkul, and learned how to use people's fear of death to advance Myrkul's affairs. Over the years, Sayton assembled a great church of Myrkul's followers, and through him Myrkul gained power across the realm of Amn. Sayton gradually became Myrkul's chosen one.

Then the Godswar happened, and Sayton's world collapsed. During the chaos his church lost nearly all its power, and as a result of the war Myrkul left the pantheon of the gods. Helpless, Sayton had to watch from the sidelines as decades of his work went to waste, and many of his carefully chosen disciples left, shifting to follow Cyric's priests and teachings. With Sayton's efforts, the shift didn't happen painlessly, but in the end Sayton had to admit defeat.

At his darkest hour, Sayton received a vision of Myrkul and his crown, and Sayton saw a way to bring Myrkul back into the world, while avenging the wrongs he had suffered by any means necessary. Sayton's ultimate motive is revenge. Sayton wants to destroy Cyric's priesthood, or at least damage it as much as possible. At the same time, he's trying to bring Myrkul back into the world.

Sayton knows Myrkul is present within the Crown of Horns. In his visions he has seen their approximate locations.

The first plan is to gather the crown's pieces together. Second, Myrkul's remains are needed from the Astral Plane. Finally, for the mighty ritual, a great many powerful items and valuable diamonds are needed, followers of Myrkul, and finally, of course, the pieces of the Crown of Horns.

Sayton is somewhat impatient, and wants to reach his goal by the fastest possible route. He knows the party has crown pieces in their possession, and wants these by any means necessary. Sayton will get the first crown piece from Cain, who becomes Sayton's undead bodyguard. From Cain, Sayton also learns that a second crown piece is located in the Feywild, in a gnome village, and is in Giles's possession. After that he'll have three of four pieces gathered.

The hardest crown piece to obtain is in the fortress of Felbarr. Vayne Thornheart is currently trying to get his hands on it.
