Occupation: Assassin for Rinki

Appearance

Jakob is about 35 years old, but still youthful-looking. He has short, dark brown, slightly curly hair. Jakob wears leather armor, under which is a bluish shirt and a weapon coat. Gray linen trousers. Jakob also has a thick, warm green cloak with a hood. At his belt he carries a quiver of arrows, a shortbow in hand. A shortsword also hangs at his belt.

Jakob speaks in something of a whisper, since he's had throat problems since he was young.

Background

Jakob was born in Everlund and lived there through his youth. He was born into a poor family, and is the only member of his family to have lived to adulthood.

Since his teens he has been a member of Rinki in Everlund. The guild offered him a place to live and work. Originally, Jakob's task was to gather information and keep an eye on people whose movements someone wanted to pay well to know. Soon he was paid to pickpocket valuables from marked individuals. And for the last 10 years he has been paid to assassinate marked individuals.

Jakob is good at his job, but this last career choice weighs heavily on him. As a counterbalance, he moved to the quiet town of Quaervarr some 7 years ago and took up hunting. Over time he has trained himself into one of the village's most skilled and respected hunters.

Jakob is very loyal to Rinki, since it has provided him everything he now has. But at the same time he gradually feels he longs for a change, to settle down, fewer dangers. Jakob nevertheless does nothing that would endanger Rinki.

Personality

Jakob is quiet and calm, rarely raises his voice and doesn't let his emotions take over.

Goal

Jakob wants to settle down and start a family. He wants to do just one more big job, one that pays well and with which he'll feel his livelihood is secured for a long time to come.

Why did he decide to just get rid of Malvin instead of killing the party at Malvin's request?

The kill order came from the very top of Rinki. Once Malvin was exposed as the smuggler plaguing the city, Borun decided Malvin's time was up. At the same time, Borun made it known that the party is off-limits, since they might still be useful to Rinki.

Attitude Toward the Players

Jakob's attitude toward the party is positive. He knows that the party is on good terms with the Everlund Council, and the guildmaster has personally forbidden anyone from touching them.

Role

Jakob can serve the players as a guide, a potential ally, and a source of information.

Information

Jakob remembers Nerinoa from Everlund and her friends Skippy and Slick. Their job at the time was to act as informants.

Malvin

Jakob and Malvin have some shared history. As bridgemaster, Malvin occasionally had problems, which Jakob helped resolve, one way or another. Malvin also paid well for his services. But in just the last few weeks, Malvin had become more of a liability, as a result of which Malvin is now "missing."

Zaphara

Jakob visited Malvin's place several times, where he also saw Zaphara and her guests. About Zaphara he knows that she was Malvin's girlfriend, roughly Jakob's age. A pleasant-looking and determined woman, interested in old objects, about which she talked at length with another man in her group.

Jakob remembers Zaphara showing him a fine old instrument she'd found, called the Tear of Samuel, which was apparently some legendary instrument. The instrument was guitar-like. Jakob doesn't know anything more about the instrument or its history.

Jakob also remembers Zaphara being on her way to the High Forest, where an old tower had apparently been found, possibly containing other old items of interest.

The other members of Zaphara's party (5 of them) gave Jakob a chill. He can't quite explain the feeling.

• one was dressed entirely in black clothing and had a pet raven that often perched on his shoulder (Magnus Kane)

• one of the men looked extremely strong and sinewy, even bigger than Cain. He wore a thick dark cloak with some vague silver-colored emblem on the front. He also had some kind of scar or tattoo on his face (on the forehead). A longsword at his belt. (Tristan Darkmore)

• The oldest-looking of the men was dressed in a dark brown, somewhat ragged thick cloak, crudely patched together in places. He was interested in Zaphara's instrument

• One of the men carried a large two-handed sword, and wore a somewhat battered metal breastplate, over which was a thick dark hooded cloak. (Vayne Thornheart)

• One of the men had only a face mask covering the upper part of his face. He appeared to be dark-skinned. He wore a black hood, a long cloak. His body was covered by a fine and carefully decorated armor made of small shaped black metal plates. He carried a large metal staff, with a spiked ball on one end.
